The Day of Atonement
22-23 September 2015 / 10 Tishrei
On the first day of the seventh Jewish month,
Tishrei (late September or early October), the shofar/trumpet is blown during
Rosh Hashanah, which signifies that a momentous event is about to take place.
According to Leviticus 23:23–25, this special
Sabbath is to be holy unto the Lord, and was an important time to prepare for
the Judgment. Ten days later, the
Day of Atonement (a.k.a. Yom Kippur)
is commemorated, which is the highest holy day on the Hebrew/Biblical calendar.
Repentance and forgiveness is the primary focus of this
special holy day, and when the temple in Jerusalem was still standing, it
was the one day of the year that God allowed the high priest, and
only him, to go into the holy place to make atonement for his sins and the
sins of the people.
It is sad to watch Jewish people praying at the
Western Wall in Jerusalem (via
knowing that they do not even know the One who can truly save their souls─the
Lord Jesus Christ─the true Messiah of Israel!
It is this same Jesus, whom Almighty God raised from
the dead, “by Whom we have now received the atonement,” and “Who is gone into
heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being
made subject unto Him.”
Hebrews 4:14–16 "Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be
touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like
as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of
grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
May God have mercy on all those (whether Jew
or Gentile), who have yet to see that it is Jesus, “In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace;”
I am just amazed at how God
ensured that the day of Jesus’ conception would be highly exalted by His
chosen people without them really knowing the ultimate significance of that very special day
until the time appointed.
And I believe that it was on The Day of Atonement
that Jesus, the Son of the living God, was miraculously conceived by "the power
of the Highest," within the veil, where no eyes could see, except the
I know this is not what men may teach about the
birth of Jesus Christ, but I did not learn this from men, but by the Holy Spirit
who is within me. And regardless of when Christ came into this world, for those
who have not received the atonement that Almighty God offers through His beloved
Son, they will not be allowed entry into the Holy City.
Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the
kingdom of God." (John 3:5)
Isaiah 51:5-6 "My righteousness is near; My
salvation is gone forth, and Mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall
wait upon Me, and on Mine arm shall they trust.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon
the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth
shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like
manner: but My salvation shall be for ever, and My righteousness shall not be
Daniel 12:1-3 "And at that time shall Michael
stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of Thy people: and
there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation
even to that same time: and at that time Thy people shall be delivered,
every one that shall be found written in the book.
And many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and
And they that be wise shall shine as the
brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the
stars for ever and ever."
All praise and honour and glory be unto
the One who sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb of God, forever and ever!
